Now, from Hong Kong
May 31, 2005, Hong Kong - Technology is so amazing to some, but so essential to many. I am one of the amazed ones who is sitting in the lobby of the Hong Kong Shangi-La Hotel and wirelessly connected to the Internet to get my emails or to chat online with my wife. It's quite a scene seeing many of my colleagues sitting here, laptops open, writing or answering emails from home or wherever.
The past week was busy with successful concerts and long distance travel from Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur, to Singapore, then to Hong Kong. The concert hall in Singapore, at the Espanade, was, I think, a Russell Johnson creation similar to Verizon Hall in the Kimmel Center. Our sound easily reverberated throughout the interesting interior.
While the bus brought us from the airport on Lantau Island to Kowloon, I was stunned by the amount of cargo boxes and ships in the harbour. It seems obvious that this port is seeing a tremendous increase in exports from China. Reading the newpaper stories about the "New" China is one thing, but to actually see the evidence brings it to reality.
I was also very impressed with the amount of construction here. The One Financial Center building, which I believe is now the tallest building in the world, literally towers above every other skyscraper in the area. It is almost as tall as Victoria Peak, the famous lookout site which is reachable via cable car.

Hi! The Philadelphia Orchestra's Mahler 5 at Singapore was absolutely stunning. Thanks for the experience of a lifetime. We hope you enjoyed your time here and didn't have too much trouble with the venue.
It's so great to stay in touch with you all and see the amazing pictures!!!
If only I could fly myself out there and hear the beautiful sound of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
Cheers from Santa Fe.

A big hello and thanks to the orchestra for posting a blog. I only wish I could be on the tour with you!
By the way, the local Philadelphia media stations have been raving about the orchestra having a blog...it seems to be a hit all around. Keep up the good work: blogging and performing too!
Expectations all around here in Taipei! Welcome and enjoy your stay!
By the way, the world's tallest building is currently the "Taipei 101". Looks taller from higher altitudes though ^_^
Great Mahler 1 in HK!! It's stunning. I'm looking forward to the cycle on record.
Also, I dun think Lang Lang played Tchaikovsky #1 well when comparing to his performance in Berlin last year.
Anyone knows what the encore piece on 1/6's concert is?
Have a safe trip home.
PS Great Movie
Great blog, I've linked to it from my classical music blog On An Overgrown Path. I've also added some memories of working with your orchestra in the late 1970's when I was at EMI/Angel and we recorded with Muti at the Met Church. I've written a piece
Reflections on the Philadelphia Orchestra which includes a short history of the Met Church, and ask if anyone can update me on what has happened to that fine old building over the last twenty odd years. Updates and comments welcome at On An Overgrown Path.
WONDERFUL concert in HK! While I loved the oboe concerto and the mahler piece, my absolute favorite was the encore...sadly, I don't know what it is. If at all possible, could someone englighten me? ..I'd love to listen to it again.
a big 'hello' to Udi Bar-David from Jeffrey Biegel--we were at Juilliard together--hope the tour is going great!
The Mahler 5 at Taipei on Jun 3 was extremely fantastic and unforgetable! The trumpet was amazing, moving, expressive and bright. So many thanks and applauses for Mr. Bilger for every sound he offered. This is the best concert I have ever attended. We will miss you all much.

-Energy and Asset Technology, Inc. (EGTY) owns a global license to market
the genetically enhanced Global Cedar growth trees, with plans to
REVOLUTIONIZE the forest-timber industry.
These newly enhanced Globa| Cedar trees require only 9-12 years of growth
before they can be harvested for lumber, whereas worldwide growth time for
lumber is 30-50 years.
Other than growing at an astonishing rate, the Global Cedar has a number
of other benefits. Its natural elements make it resistant to termites, and
the lack of oils and sap found in the wood make it resistant to forest fire,
ensuring higher returns on investments.
T
he wood is very lightweight and strong, lighter than Poplar and over twice
as strong as Balsa, which makes it great for construction. It also has
the unique ability to regrow itself from the stump, minimizing the land and
time to replant and develop new root systems.
Based on current resources and agreements, EGTY projects revenues of $140
Million with an approximate profit margin of 40% for each 9-year cycle. With
anticipated growth, EGTY is expected to challenge Deltic Timber Corp. during
its initial 9-year cycle.
Deltic Timber Corp. currently trades at over $38.00 a share with about $153
Million in revenues. As the reputation and demand for the Global Cedar tree
continues to grow around the world EGTY believes additional multi-million
dollar agreements will be forthcoming. The Global Cedar nursery has produced
about 100,000 infant plants and is developing a production growth target of
250,000 infant plants per month.
Energy and Asset Technology is currently in negotiations with land and business
owners in New Zealand, Greece and Malaysia regarding the purchase of their popular
and profitable fast growing infant tree plants. Inquiries from the governments of
Brazil and Ecuador are also being evaluated.
